Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka both joined the elite list of players to win the Sunshine Double following their victories at Indian Wells and the Miami Open.

Sabalenka defeated Coco Gauff in Miami, while Sinner managed to find a way past Jiri Lehecka to secure the accomplishment.

Sinner became the eighth man to achieve the accolade, while Sabalenka joined an even rarer list by becoming just the fifth woman to win Indian Wells and the Miami Open back-to-back.

13 players across the ATP and WTA Tours have won the Sunshine Double, but there has only been one player who has hit the achievement without winning a Grand Slam.

Marcelo Rios won the Sunshine Double but not a Grand Slam

Marcelo Rios became the fourth man to win the Sunshine Double in 1998, by winning Indian Wells and the Miami Open.

Rios defeated Greg Rusedski in the Indian Wells final and Andre Agassi at the Miami Open to earn the rare achievement.

Alexander Zverev is the greatest player to never win a Grand Slam title – who else is in the conversation?

That is why you are never going to be a great player. I mean, you are a great player, but you are never going to win a Grand Slam if you’re going to complain about the balls.“When was the last time Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic complained about the balls? Like what?”

The Chilean star earned the world number one spot in the rankings thanks to his back-to-back achievement.

However, despite his incredible accolades on the court, the star retired without winning a single Grand Slam.

Rios is often cited as the best player to never win a Grand Slam, particularly as he won 18 career titles elsewhere.

How close did Marcelo Rios come to winning a Grand Slam?

Rios’ inability to win a Grand Slam is one of the sport’s biggest mysteries, as he was undoubtedly one of the best players of his generation.

The Chilean held a bizarre record at the major tournaments, despite how high he often was in the rankings.

Rios only reached past the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam on one occasion, when he reached the final of the Australian Open in 1998.

He was defeated comfortably in straight sets by Petr Korda, who ran out the winner by a scoreline of 6-2 6-2 6-2.

Rios was predominantly a clay court player, which makes his inability to reach past the quarter-final of Roland Garros even more baffling.
