Halle Open issue statement as Nick Kyrgios withdraws from their event due to injury

Nick Kyrgios is set to spend another period on the sidelines.

The Australian star has been plagued by injury since reaching the 2022 Wimbledon final, undergoing wrist reconstruction and four knee surgeries.

However, Kyrgios returned to the court at the Stuttgart Open earlier this month; seemingly having overcome his physical troubles.

In a cruel twist of fate, Kyrgios has suffered yet another injury prior to competing in Halle, Germany.

The Halle Open’s statement following Nick Kyrgios’ withdrawal

“Due to an injury Nick Kyrgios has to pull out of the tournament – get well soon Nick!” a post on the Halle Open’s Instagram page read.

“Lorenzo Sonego is going to replace him in the singles main draw.

“Altmaier and Fonseca move up to the doubles draw.”

Kyrgios had been due to contest a blockbuster first-round match against world number five Ben Shelton.

As noted by the tournament itself, Shelton will now play Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the Halle Open first round.

Kyrgios has also withdrawn from the doubles event. He was due to play alongside world number 11 singles player Alexander Bublik.

Joao Fonseca and Daniel Altmaier will take their place in the doubles draw. They will play Ethan Quinn and Learner Tien in the first round.

Kyrgios received great news prior to his withdrawal on Tuesday: he has been handed a wildcard for the Wimbledon doubles event.

For context, Kyrgios has not played at the event since losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2022 Wimbledon Men’s Singles final.

However, now that the Australian has suffered an injury, his participation at Wimbledon has been cast into doubt.

The Australian, who could also receive a wildcard for the singles event, is due to play in the doubles event alongside Alexander Bublik.

Only time will tell as to whether Kyrgios will be able to recover sufficiently in order to participate in the third Grand Slam of the year.
