British tennis was dealt a sharp uppercut on day one of Wimbledon

Of the 11 Britons competing, 10 lost their first-round matches on the first day of play in south-west London.

Jack Pinnington Jones was the only player who did not lose on day one.

However, he did not win either.

The British player trailed 28th seed Brandon Nakashima by two sets when play was halted due to bad light.

Greg Rusedski, the former British number one, has attempted to explain why British tennis is struggling at this current time.

Greg Rusedski says British tennis is not producing enough good junior players

“I don’t think it’s bleak, I just think we are not necessarily getting enough juniors,” Rusedski said on the Off Court with Greg podcast.

“If you look in the women’s game we have Klugman, Stojsavljevic and all these players. They are great prospects and it will take time for them to develop.

“In the women’s game even Katie Boulter is playing great so we have some youngsters coming up, but in the boys, there is not really anything coming through. Let’s be frank about it.

“Your tenure as a chief executive or a person who is in charge is what you are bringing through, it’s not what you have been given.

British players on Wimbledon day one

“If you look at Jack Draper he came through his Dad’s generation, which is two CEOs again, Jack and Emma were from that generation – even if you take Emma you could say she was more Michael Downey than Scott Lloyd.”

Draper and Raducanu both withdrew from Wimbledon shortly before they were due to play their respective first-round matches.

Raducanu withdrew on the eve of the event, citing a stress fracture in her right leg.

Draper withdrew the following morning, revealing the re-emergence of a troublesome left arm injury.

“You have to put this into perspective and also you have to put into perspective that you are getting £40 or £50 million a year from Wimbledon and then you are getting money from Sport England and you are not building indoor facilities and you are saying sports science are very good,” Rusedski continued.

“That’s why we hire people because they are so good at sports science, yet we are talking about our two best players consistently being injured.

“You have to look at this reality and the situation on paper. I think Rafael Nadal says it best ‘if, if, if doesn’t matter’. It’s about what you are doing now. I think that is why Rafa is one of the greatest, no excuses, no complaints, finds a solution.

“I think you have to be objective.

“You are talking about Norrie who was top 10 and won Indian Wells, you have Pinnington-Jones [pictured below] who is a great prospect for the future, but a lot of these players are going down the University route and not coming on to the pro scene.

“We have talked about Italian tennis and how brilliant it was.

“We always want someone to come out like Andy Murray, that’s an anomaly, or Emma Raducanu winning the US Open, but we need more players in the top 100 or top 50 range, especially with the investment that is being put in year in and year out.”

Murray and Raducanu remain the last British players to have won a Grand Slam title in singles events.

Murray, now retired, won his third and final major title at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships, beating Milos Raonic in the final.

Raducanu became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title when she defeated Leylah Fernandez in the 2021 US Open final.

Since then, Cameron Norrie has recorded Britain’s best performance in a Grand Slam singles event, reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 2022.

Norrie also advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2025.

This year, he was defeated by Michael Zheng in the first round.

Dan Evans should have been awarded a Wimbledon wildcard

Earlier this month, Dan Evans announced his intention to retire at Wimbledon.

Remarkably, the former world number 21 did not receive a wildcard for the Wimbledon Men’s Singles main draw, forcing him to compete in qualifying at Roehampton.

Evans lost in the second round of qualifying to Australian player Tristan Schoolkate.

How badly treated do you feel Dan Evans has been by Wimbledon?

The decision not to award Evans a wildcard was a clear mistake; even more so following the poor performances of British wildcards on the first day of Wimbledon.

Evans, who did receive a wildcard for the men’s doubles event, deserved to say a proper goodbye to the Wimbledon crowd.

The 36-year-old was denied that opportunity, much to the disappointment of British tennis fans.
