A former World No. 1 has announced their retirement from tennis over two decades after making their debut.

Rohan Bopanna has been a veteran of the game for the past few years, but at 44, he’s announced his retirement from tennis.

The two-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 was a successful doubles player, winning majors with multiple partners.

Several players, including British star Kyle Edmund, have retired from tennis in 2025, and now Bopanna has followed suit with an emotional message.

Former World No. 1 retires from tennis

Bopanna became the oldest major champion in the world with his Australian Open win in 2024, but now he’s called time on his career.

The Indian icon took to social media to share a message with his fans after calling time on his illustrious career.

“A goodbye… But not the end,” wrote Bopanna on Instagram. “How do you bid farewell to something that gave your life its meaning?

“After 20 unforgettable years on tour, however, it’s time… I’m officially hanging up my racquet. As I write this, my heart feels both heavy and grateful,” he wrote.

“Starting my journey from a small town of Coorg in India, chopping blocks of wood to strengthen my serve, jogging through coffee estates to build stamina and chasing dreams on cracked courts to standing under the lights of the biggest arenas in the world – it all feels surreal.

“Tennis hasn’t been just a game for me – it has given me purpose when I was lost, strength when I was broken and belief when the world doubted me.

“Every time I stepped onto a court, it taught me perseverance, resilience to rise, to fight again when everything inside me said I couldn’t – and most of all, reminded me why I started who I am.”

Bopanna reached World No. 1 in 2024 after winning the Australian Open with Aussie Matthew Ebden.

Rohan Bopanna’s incredible tennis career

Bopanna won titles throughout the entirety of his lengthy career, winning 27 tournaments between 2008 and 2024.

The Indian star’s last victory in doubles came at the Miami Open, alongside Ebden, and he most recently reached a final in September 2025.

Bopanna lost the Japan Open final to Hugo Nys and Édouard Roger-Vasselin alongside Takeru Yuzuki at the age of 44.

The star reached six Grand Slam finals in doubles, winning two of them, with Wimbledon the only final he did not reach in his career.
