Hubert Hurkacz has struggled to re-capture his best form through the first six months of this year.

The Polish star was defeated in the Libema Open first round on Wednesday, beaten 6-3, 6-7, 6-7 by Hungarian veteran Marton Fucsovics.

Hurkacz, who returned from long-term injury at the start of this year, has now lost an eighth opening-round match of the season.

The Pole’s latest loss has seen him sink to new depths.

Hubert Hurkacz is set to fall out of the ATP top 100

Hurkacz was last ranked outside of the ATP top 100 on September 9, 2018.

The young Pole rose from world number 109 to 95 following his second round performance at the US Open.

For almost eight years, the Polish star had been an ever-present in the world’s top 100.

However, Hurkacz is now set to fall seven places to world number 103 after losing to Marton Fucsovics in the Netherlands.

Hurkacz could fall even further, should Rinky Hijikata and Leandro Riedi continue to progress in Stuttgart and Ilkley, respectively.

It really has been a difficult year for Hurkacz, who many had predicted would rise back up the rankings following his long-term knee injury.

The Polish player played a key role in Poland’s United Cup triumph, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev.

Hurkacz has failed to inspire the masses since then, suffering multiple early exits at major ATP events.

One hopes the Polish star – a two-time Masters champion – can find some semblance of form over the coming months and rise back up the rankings.

Hubert Hurkacz’s best Grand Slam performance

Hurkacz’s loss in the Netherlands was a surprising result when considering his prior success on grass courts.

The Pole’s best major result to date occurred at the 2021 Wimbledon championships, when he reached the semi-finals.

Hurkacz defeated Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer en route to the last four, before losing to seventh seed Matteo Berrettini.

Matteo played unbelievable match today. Huge congrats to him,” Hurkacz said during his post-match press conference after losing 6-3, 6-0, 6-7, 6-4.

“I mean, every single service game, he was serving bombs. I didn’t have many chances, basically probably zero.

“So huge congrats for him that he kept, like, such a high level throughout the whole four sets.”

Novak Djokovic defeated Berrettini in the final, winning his sixth Wimbledon title.
