It will be the first time world number 192 Goodall – the highest-ranked player on the team – has played Marchenko but he will be expected to triumph over the world number 224.

Their match will be followed by Chris Eaton against Ukraine number one Sergiy Stakovsky in the Euro/Africa Zone Group One tie at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena.

Eaton, ranked 383, faces a much tougher task against the world number 125.

Saturday’s doubles rubber sees Ross Hutchins and Colin Fleming team up against Stakovsky and Sergei Bubka.

Sunday’s singles matches will be the reverse of Friday’s rubbers, with Goodall again first up against Stakovsky.

Captain John Lloyd confirmed his four-man line-up on Friday morning, with James Ward the man to miss out from the five who travelled to Glasgow.
