The British team were given a huge boost when Murray declared himself fit to play at Liverpool’s Echo Arena despite a left wrist injury, but the experienced Polish pair proved too strong, leaving GB needing to win both of Sunday’s singles matches to avoid relegation to Group II.

It was a story of missed chances for the British duo, who took only one of a hatful of break points.
