Stan Wawrinka was waiting to hear if he would receive a wild card for the French Open.
The 2015 champion, set to retire at the end of the year, is unlikely to qualify for the main draw due to his ranking.
Do you think Stan Wawrinka deserves a wildcard for Roland Garros this year?
He could, however, receive a wild card as a former champion.
The French Open has yet to announce their wild cards, although a recent social media post seems to confirm Wawrinka will make one last visit to Paris.
The French Open appear to confirm Stan Wawrinka wild card
During a press conference, the French Open shared the following announcement on X.
“Stan Wawrinka, Gael Monfils and Caroline Garcia’s careers will be celebrated this year,” they said.
“Wawrinka and Monfils after their final match.

“Garcia, between the women’s singles semi-finals.”
Announcing a farewell celebration for Wawrinka and Gael Monfils, it’s fairly likely that they will receive wild cards into the main draw.
Stan Wawrinka’s Grand Slam record
| Grand Slam | Best performance | Win/Loss record | Win % |
| Australian Open | Champion – 2014 | 45-19 | 70% |
| French Open | Champion – 2015 | 46-19 | 71% |
| Wimbledon | Quarter-finalist – 2014, 2015 | 23-18 | 56% |
| US Open | Champion – 2016 | 46-16 | 74% |
There is, of course, a slim chance that they would ‘celebrate’ their careers after their qualifying matches, but that seems unlikely.
So, all being well, fans can look forward to Wawrinka’s last dance in the French capital!
Stan Wawrinka won the 2015 French Open
Wawrinka would be more than deserving of a wild card spot, having won the title 11 years ago.
But how did the Swiss icon emerge victorious in Paris?
Entering the tournament as the eighth seed, few expected Wawrinka to beat the likes of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer to the title.
Perhaps it was that lack of expectation that worked in Wawrinka’s favour, as he eased into the quarter-finals without much trouble.
- 2015 French Open 1R [WIN] vs Marsel Ilhan, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3
- 2015 French Open 2R [WIN] vs Dusan Lajovic, 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3

- 2015 French Open 4R [WIN] vs Gilles Simon, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2
There, he met his countryman and 2009 champion, Federer.
Delivering one of the finest performances of his career, Wawrinka defeated Federer in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6.
At the same stage, Nadal lost to Djokovic, confirming a new champion would be crowned on Court Philippe Chatrier.
Many believed that Djokovic would be the man to lift the trophy, as he continued his search for the Career Grand Slam.
When Wawrinka defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Djokovic defeated Andy Murray in the semi-finals, the stage was set.
Wawrinka vs Djokovic for the French Open title…
It was the Serb who took an early lead, winning the first set 6-4, but Wawrinka refused to be beaten, battling back to win in four, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

Wawrinka doubled his Grand Slam tally that day, and made a solid attempt to defend his title a year later.
He reached the final of the 2016 French Open, where he lost to Nadal.
How well has Stan Wawrinka performed in 2026 so far?

The results aren’t as impressive as they once were, but his efforts shouldn’t be overlooked.
