Frances Tiafoe’s Washington campaign has come to an end at the first hurdle.
Tiafoe, the sixth seed, was beaten by 2025 Cincinnati Open semi-finalist, Terence Atmane.
Atmane, the world number 56, roared back from a one-set deficit to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
It was a surprising result in many respects: Tiafoe had been playing well in the months prior to the event, and he had beaten Atmane on three previous occasions this year.

“I enjoyed it so much,” Atmane said afterwards. “Playing Frances is always a tough battle. But tonight the score was a bit different because I had lost to him four times already this year, so the fourth time was my charm.
“I took my chances when I had to and that made the difference tonight.”
This was a tough defeat for Tiafoe, something the former US Open semi-finalist admitted during his post-match press conference.

“My respect to him for winning the match, but very, very poor from my side,” Tiafoe told reporters in Washington following Monday’s contest.
“I play every year, and I never performed how I have today. I was flat. Just wasn’t good enough.
“You know, give him credit, but I definitely helped him over the line.
“Very disappointing,” the American continued. “Especially for the year that I’ve been having, super disappointing. Honestly, that’s all I can really say.
“I had a lot of high hopes. This one hurts a lot.”
Tiafoe enjoyed a productive grass-court swing, winning his fourth career title at the Halle Open and reaching the Stuttgart Open quarter-finals.
However, this latest result represents a bitter blow for the 28-year-old.
The Washington Open is, in many ways, Tiafoe’s home event. The American was born and raised in Maryland, which is a 50-minute drive from Washington DC.
For this reason, the loss to Atmane will certainly sting.
However, as demonstrated on multiple prior occasions, Tiafoe has the gumption and resilience required to quickly bounce back and register strong performances at the two Masters events in August: the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open.

Last year, Tiafoe reached the Washington Open quarter-finals after beating compatriot Aleksandar Kovacevic and Flavio Cobolli.
He was subsequently beaten in the quarter-finals by fourth seed Ben Shelton.
Following his loss in the first round of this year’s event, Tiafoe is set to surrender 75 ATP ranking points.
As things stand, Tiafoe is set to maintain his status as the world number 19.
However, he could be overtaken by the likes of Tommy Paul, Luciano Darderi and Francisco Cerundolo: all of whom are competing in ATP events this week.
