Frances Tiafoe has paid tribute to Gael Monfils after watching the Frenchman exit Indian Wells in what will be his last-ever match at the event.
Speaking after his latest win, the American had nothing but kind words for the retiring cult hero, who has given so much to the sport of tennis during his 22 years on the ATP Tour.
Gael Monfils is a player loved by all, and Frances Tiafoe is no exception.
Alexander Zverev is the greatest player to never win a Grand Slam title – who else is in the conversation?
In revealing the true extent of their relationship, the American also shared the conversation he had with Monfils right before his final match in the California desert.
Frances Tiafoe reveals what his relationship with Gael Monfils is really like
He told reporters at his press conference, when asked how it felt to be comparable to the affable, enigmatic 39-year-old: “We were talking about that before. We both played today. He’s like, man, when I’m done, you’re the guy, you’re the entertaining guy. We’re such good friends. Actually came up together. Our cars came at the same time, coming from the courts.
“He’s just such a legend, man. Obviously, it’s not something that we try to put on. Just us enjoying the game. We just love the game. We just try to put out joy.

“There is so much, a lot of people are going through stuff, the world’s all over the place, and you see entertainment and people actually doing something they love at a high level. That stuff comes back, the energy comes back.
“We both just love what we do. Came from humble beginnings and we just come out there and try and compete at the highest level and show that joy and have people love what we do.
“I’m going to miss him a ton, but we’re gonna to be in touch anyway so it’s going to be great.”
Frances Tiafoe gets chance for instant revenge vs Flavio Cobolli
After winning his first-round match against Jenson Brooksby, Tiafoe has set up another clash against Flavio Cobolli.
It marks the second time they have faced each other in as many weeks, having competed in the final of the Mexican Open last Sunday.
If you were in charge of tennis, what is the first rule you would change?
There, the Italian came out on top in straight sets, and in doing so took the title.
Tiafoe admitted he nearly lost it with anger during that loss to Cobolli, but he has instantly been afforded a chance for redemption.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two, with Tiafoe currently leading the head-to-head with two wins to one.
However, Cobolli’s more recent bragging rights and recent run of form could give him the edge in this match for a spot in the Indian Wells Round of 16.
