Fran Jones achieved one of the biggest victories of her career by defeating Venus Williams at the Miami Open.

Williams may not be the player she once was, but the British star was impressive in dispatching her in straight sets.

Jones showed Williams respect after the victory, which helped her set up a second round match with Jessica Pegula.

By defeating the American icon, she has achieved something that no other WTA star has managed previously.

Fran Jones’ incredible achievement against Venus Williams

Williams is yet to win a match this year in her first six tournaments, but that makes Jones’ win no less impressive.

She looked confident throughout despite lining up against one of her biggest-ever inspirations in the sport.

With the victory, the British number four has now hit a WTA Tour milestone that no other player has done.

Jones is the first player to claim her first WTA 1000 victory against a former world number one, according to OptaAce.

The British star was on the cusp of dropping out of the top 100, so her victory against Williams was much-needed.

Fran Jones continues to pick up American scalps

Jones has struggled with her fitness this year, but she’s still managed to put in some impressive performances.

Her victory against Williams was not the first upset she has achieved against a big American name in 2026.

She defeated Emma Navarro in the first round of the ASB Classic at the beginning of the year, on her way to the quarter-finals of the competition.

However, her victory against Williams stopped a three-match losing streak in main draws since then so it was even more welcome.

Jones will need to cause another American upset against Pegula if she wants to continue her run in Miami.
