Ferrer, who is ranked fifth in the world, will next face fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, who overcame Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-1 6-3.

After struggling through his opening match, Andy Roddick enjoyed a much easier day on Thursday as he swept past Jurgen Melzer 7-6 (7/2) 6-2.

Next up for Roddick, who won his 26th career title on Sunday at the China Open, will be Serbia’s Viktor Troicki, who progressed after seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was forced to retire.

Ninth seed Tomas Berdych booked his spot in the final eight by posting a 7-6 (8/6) 6-2 win over sixth seed Tommy Robredo of Spain.

He will take on third seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile in the quarters after he defeated American Amer Delic 6-4 7-6 (7/4).

Richard Gasquet cruised to a 6-1 6-2 victory over local favourite Kei Nishikori to set up a showdown with 12th seed Rainer Schuettler, a 6-3 6-7 (12/14) 6-4 winner against Russian Mikhail Youzhny.
