Federer will not return to Wimbledon next year, believes Grand Slam legend

A Grand Slam legend believes Roger Federer will not return to Wimbledon next summer after his shock quarter-final loss to Hubert Hurkacz.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion made an impressive return to SW19 and showed signs of his best tennis before crashing out to the Polish star.

The 39-year-old had played just a handful of matches in the lead-up to the Championships after recovering from two knee surgeries in 2020.

In a recent interview, Boris Becker explained that it may indeed have been Federer’s last performance at the grass-court Slam.

“I have a feeling he won’t be returning to Wimbledon next summer, especially after what happened in the quarter-finals,” said the German star. “I think it was a huge shock to him.

“I think Roger arrived at Wimbledon thinking everything was going according to plan. He had recovered from his knee problems, he had used the clay to get back in shape and recover confidence to reach the bottom (latter stages) of the Championships.

“I don’t think he showed up in London with the thought of retirement in his head, but now he might consider it. The way he lost to Hubert Hurkacz changed things.”
