Federer scoops consolation gold

Just two days before he loses his long-standing world number one ranking in singles, Federer and Swiss team-mate Stanislas Wawrinka triumphed in the final with a 6-3 6-4 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 victory over Sweden’s Thomas Johansson and Simon Aspelin.

A 12-time grand slam champion, Federer claimed his first doubles crown since Halle in 2005. And although his singles challenge was ended at the quarter-final stage by James Blake earlier in the week, Federer admitted Saturday’s victory will go down as one of his most memorable.
