Federer forced out

The second seed was due to face James Blake in the quarter-finals but announced via his website that injury had forced him to withdraw.

Federer said: “As a precaution, and because I would be unable to play at 100%, I have unfortunately had to take the difficult decision not to play.”

The injury means Federer will have to wait at least one more year to try to make it beyond the quarter-finals at this tournament – something he has never done.
