British number one Emma Raducanu was forced to retire due to illness from her first match at the Wuhan Open on Tuesday.

The Brit trailed America’s Ann Li 6-1 4-1, and after a medical timeout, she brought the match to a close.

Raducanu, who recently earned Rafael Nadal comparisons, was in clear discomfort throughout the match, and all tennis fans will hope she can recover to her best health as soon as possible.

Simply put, the result was a secondary factor when analysed within the context of Raducanu’s health scare.

Although the Brit will certainly be disappointed to have exited the Wuhan Open at the first hurdle, she can take some comfort in a positive development.

Emma Raducanu’s WTA ranking points have been maintained, meaning her opening-round loss in Wuhan should not affect her ranking too drastically.

The Brit had no points to defend at this year’s Wuhan Open, after withdrawing from the 2024 tournament due to a foot injury.

Consequently, she will remain on 1,563 WTA ranking points.

Remarkably, Raducanu has risen one spot to 29th in the WTA rankings, following Veronika Kudermetova’s loss to Magdalena Frech in the Wuhan Open round of 64.

Kudermetova has moved down two spots after losing 52 WTA ranking points, pushing Raducanu and Dayan Yastremska up the rankings.

Raducanu’s next tournament is currently unknown. After all, suffering a health scare on-court demands the utmost caution, and Raducanu must prioritise her well-being above results.

That being said, if Raducanu does decide to compete again this season, her next tournament could be at the WTA 250 in Japan or the WTA 500 Ningbo Open in China.

Both tournaments are scheduled to take place from October 13 to 19.

Raducanu closes in on Australian Open seeded spot

There are just three tournament weeks left before the season-ending WTA Finals event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

As per the WTA live rankings, Raducanu is ranked 30th on the Tour. If Australian Open seedings were confirmed on Tuesday, Raducanu would be included.

Of course, there are still tournaments to be played, meaning Raducanu’s seeded status at the 2026 Australian Open is far from guaranteed.

However, Raducanu’s strong form throughout 2025 has earned her the right to be included in such discussions, and she now has the opportunity to secure her first seeded position at a Grand Slam since the 2022 Australian Open.
