Emma Raducanu made a big decision recently, one that appears to have been a mistake following her loss to Barbora Krejcikova at the Korea Open.
Raducanu spurned three match points against two-time Grand Slam champion Krejcikova, before going on to lose the contest 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.
This loss was particularly heartbreaking for Raducanu due to her significant lead during the match. She was 4-1 ahead in the second set and served for the match at 5-3.
Raducanu could not close out the contest and was made to pay by Krejcikova, who has made a habit of engineering great escapes.
With the Brit’s loss, it has become clear that Raducanu made an erroneous decision in the aftermath of her US Open campaign.
Emma Raducanu made a mistake by skipping the Billie Jean King Cup

On September 5, it was widely reported that Emma Raducanu had chosen to skip the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, instead choosing to play on the WTA Tour and develop her relationship with new coach Francisco Roig.
This decision has proven to be a mistake on Raducanu’s part.
Raducanu has undoubtedly been afforded more time to work with Roig. That fact cannot be argued against.
However, by losing in her second match at the Korea Open, Emma Raducanu has lost WTA points after reaching the quarter-final stage in 2024.
Furthermore, Great Britain’s BJK Cup squad were incredibly close to reaching their first BJK Cup Final since 1981, losing a closely contested tie against the US in the semi-finals.
Considering how close the British squad were to reaching the final without the presence of their best player, Raducanu’s participation could have swung the tie in favour of Great Britain.
To blame Raducanu for her country’s loss would be extremely unfair. She had no bearing on the tie and cannot bear the responsibility for her compatriots’ performances.
However, Raducanu’s talent and ability would have been an invaluable asset to the British team, and she could have made a real difference to Britain’s fortunes in the BJK Cup this year.
The opportunity to shatter Great Britain’s abysmal BJK Cup record has been put on hold for another year. The country has never won the BJK Cup, and holds the record for the most runner-up finishes without winning a title.
Great Britain’s last BJK Cup Final
Great Britain’s last venture to the BJK Cup Final came 44 years ago in 1981.
The British team, boasting Virginia Wade and Sue Barker, only lost two matches on their way to the final, defeating Belgium, France, USSR and Australia.
However, the British squad were comprehensively beaten at the final hurdle, losing 3-0 to the US.

In the first rubber, Wade was defeated by Andrea Jaeger, 6-3, 6-1. In the second rubber, the tie was sealed, as Chris Evert defeated Sue Barker, 6-2, 6-1.
In the final contest, Kathy Jordan and Rosie Casals beat Jo Durie and Virginia Wade 6-4, 7-5.
