Emma Raducanu’s US Open campaign came to a grinding halt against Elena Rybakina, and she has since made a decision branded as ‘shortsighted.’
The British number one has enjoyed the most consistent period of her career in 2025, registering multiple impressive performances against world number one Aryna Sabalenka, while also reaching the Miami Open quarter-finals.
Raducanu looked set for another strong run at the US Open after showcasing compelling form in the first two rounds.
However, she ran into 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, who comfortably dispatched the Brit, 6-1, 6-2.
Raducanu made a key decision following the loss, one that has left a tennis commentator feeling ‘disappointed.’

Catherine Whitaker says Emma Raducanu’s decision to withdraw from the Billie Jean King Cup Finals is ‘shortsighted’
On September 5, Emma Raducanu announced she would not be competing for Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, instead choosing to focus on the WTA Tour and develop her relationship with new coach Francisco Roig.
While the BJK Cup gets underway, Raducanu will be competing at the Korea Open.
David Law, Catherine Whitaker and Matt Roberts discussed the potential reasons for Raducanu’s withdrawal during their latest episode of The Tennis Podcast.
The trio – notable tennis pundits and commentators – noted the opportunity for Raducanu to increase her ranking and possibly attain a seeded spot for the Australian Open, and the possible attraction of a lucrative appearance fee at the Korea Open.
Despite arguing that these potential reasons are ‘valid,’ Catherine Whitaker also branded Raducanu’s decision as ‘shortsighted.’
In summing up the discussion, Whitaker said: “It’s a tough scene isn’t it? Because all of those motivations are valid, but ultimately they only outweigh representing Great Britain at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals if that only has limited value to you.
“And this decision clearly shows the limited value that Emma Raducanu perceives in playing this competition, which really disappoints me, it really disappoints me.
“I think it’s shortsighted because I think it could be so good for her, so good for her, and has been good for her in the past.”
Who will play for Great Britain at the BJK Cup?
Great Britain have never won the BJK Cup, last reaching the final in 1981.
In 2024, they came narrowly close to reaching the final, losing 1-2 to Slovakia at the semi-final stage.
Despite the absence of Emma Raducanu, the Great Britain BJK Cup squad still boasts a number of high-flying talents.
Katie Boulter headlines the squad, with world number 82 Sonay Kartal and Jodie Burrage also competing. Francesca Jones, who has enjoyed an impressive year on the WTA Tour, will also compete in place of Raducanu.

The team will face Japan in the Billie Jean King Cup quarter-finals on Thursday.
