After an underwhelming end to the 2025 WTA season, fans of Emma Navarro will have been hoping for an instant response to start 2026.
After the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, Navarro lost in the opening round at four of the seven events she competed in: the Washington Open, Cincinnati Open, Monterrey Open and Wuhan Open.
Navarro’s best result at the end of 2025 occurred at the China Open, where she reached the quarter-finals. However, this was an outlier among multiple underwhelming outings.
Do you think women should play best-of-five set matches?
Despite the results, Navarro has managed to maintain her top 20 ranking. However, her status as a top 20 player could be under threat should her results fail to improve.
Simply put: Emma Navarro’s form at the start of 2026 has failed to inspire, and her fans should be concerned.
Emma Navarro’s poor start to the 2026 WTA season
The world number 17 began her season at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was the second seed.
In her opening match, Navarro was stunned by British number three Francesca Jones, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

Around 10 days later, Navarro’s form showed signs of improvement, as she reached the Adelaide International quarter-finals after defeating Emerson Jones and Yulia Putintseva.
The sixth seed was then defeated by unseeded Diana Shnaider, and subsequently travelled to Melbourne for the Australian Open.
After reaching the quarter-finals in 2025, few could have expected what would transpire in Melbourne.
Navarro was upset in the first round yet again, this time by Magda Linette, who won the contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
| Tournament | Round | Opponent Navarro lost to |
| ASB Classic | Second round [first match after bye] | Francesca Jones |
| Adelaide International | Quarter-finals | Diana Shnaider |
| Australian Open | First Round | Magda Linette |
| Abu Dhabi | Second Round [first match after bye] | Hailey Baptiste |
The American has since travelled to the United Arab Emirates for the Abu Dhabi Open. On Tuesday, Navarro lost her opening match at an event for the third time in four attempts, defeated by compatriot Hailey Baptiste, 7-6, 0-6, 6-3.
Emma Navarro’s next tournament
Following her loss in Abu Dhabi, Emma Navarro is set to travel a short distance to Doha for the 2026 Qatar Open.
The tournament, won by Amanda Anisimova in 2025, is a WTA 1000 event that will run from February 8 to 14.
Is Rybakina the best player on the WTA Tour right now?
If not, who is better?
Alongside Navarro, some of the WTA’s biggest stars are set to compete in Doha. Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek are all on the entry list for the event.
Emma Raducanu, Victoria Mboko and Elena Rybakina – the 2026 Australian Open champion – are also on the entry list.
