Marta Kostyuk makes Ukrainian tennis history
Following her victory against compatriot Svitolina, Marta Kostyuk has become the first Ukrainian woman in the Open Era to reach the Roland Garros Women’s Singles semi-finals.
The only other Ukrainian player – male or female – to qualify for the semi-finals of a Roland Garros singles event is Andrei Medvedev.
Medvedev, born in Kyiv, first reached the semi-finals in 1993. He was defeated in the last four by two-time Roland Garros champion Sergi Bruguera.
Six years later, Medvedev once again found himself in the semi-finals.
On this occasion, Medvedev emerged victorious; defeating Fernando Meligeni 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 to qualify for his first Grand Slam final.
In the final, Medvedev was on course to win his first Grand Slam title after winning the first two sets against Andre Agassi 6-1, 6-2.
However, Agassi roared back to claim the title, winning the last three sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

Medvedev retired two years later, in 2001.
