Elina Svitolina advanced to the Bad Homburg Open quarter-finals after defeating Liudmila Samsonova on Wednesday.
The Ukrainian, 31, had been due to play China’s Xinyu Wang in the last eight.
On Wednesday afternoon, Svitolina’s withdrawal from the event was confirmed by the tournament on social media.
Concerningly, the 31-year-old has sustained a right hip injury just five days before the start of Wimbledon.

Elina Svitolina sends a message following her Bad Homburg withdrawal
“Unfortunately I will be pulling out of my quarter-final match in Bad Homburg,” Svitolina said in a post on the Bad Homburg Open’s X page.
“Last night was a hard-fought victory but it took little bit more than expected out of my body. So therefore, I need a few more days to recover.
“I wish all the best to all the players who are still competing and a lot of success to the tournament, and hopefully to see you all next year.”

Svitolina, the world number eight, now faces a race against time to be fit for this year’s Wimbledon.
Last year, Svitolina reached the Wimbledon third round, defeating Anna Bondar and Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
She was then defeated by 24th seed Elise Mertens.
Svitolina has twice reached the semi-finals in South-West London: in 2019 and 2023.
She was defeated by Simona Halep and Marketa Vondrousova; both of whom went on to claim their maiden Wimbledon titles.

Who will Xinyu Wang play next?
Following Svitolina’s withdrawal, Xinyu Wang has received a bye through to the Bad Homburg semi-finals.
There, she will play either sixth seed Naomi Osaka or former top-10 player Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Wang has a 2-2 record against Alexandrova. The Chinese player has never contested a match against Osaka on the WTA Tour.
Should Wang advance to the showpiece event in Bad Homburg, she will play one of Iga Swiatek, Emma Navarro, Elena-Gabriela Ruse, Karolina Muchova, Irina-Camelia Begu, or Clara Tauson.
Svitolina’s withdrawal from Bad Homburg has given Wang an excellent opportunity to win her first singles title on the WTA Tour.
The Chinese star, a Roland Garros champion in doubles, has reached the final of two WTA Tour events in the past: the 2025 Berlin Open and 2026 ASB Classic.
She was defeated in Berlin by Marketa Vondrousova, and in Auckland by Elina Svitolina.
Wang, ranked 52nd on the Tour, will not be a seeded player at Wimbledon later this month.
