The British number one was making his first appearance since he had to pull out of the Dubai Tennis Championships because of a virus, and quickly regained that winning feeling by beating German Nicolas Kiefer and Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4 0-6 10-7 in a champions tie-break.

The British duo claimed their only game break in the 10th game of the final set to close it out, but Kiefer and Berdych stormed back to level the match before Murray and Hutchins wrapped up the win.

Murray is seeded fourth in the singles at the California event and is set to take on Albert Montanes in his opening match on Saturday.
