The world number three looked rusty as he went down 6-4 6-4 to rising Latvian Ernests Gulbis.

Fifth seed Tomas Berdych had fewer problems in beating Australian wild card Brydan Klein 6-0 6-4.

Mario Ancic beat Amer Delic 7-6 (7/2) 6-7 (4/7) 7-6 (8/6), Florent Serra saw off Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3 7-6 (7/3) and Paul-Henri Mathieu overcame Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-3 6-3.
