The Russian, the world number seven, conceded the first set to the American teenager but dug deep to recover for a 4-6 6-3 6-3 victory and reach the final at the hard-court event for the second year in succession.

Dementieva, who lost to France’s Amelie Mauresmo in the final last year, will meet Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the showpiece match.

Safarova, the world number 46, also rallied from a set down in her semi-final encounter with second-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy to register 4-6 6-3 6-4 triumph and book her place in the final at this event for the second time.

Sunday’s match will only be the second meeting between the two players on the WTA tour. Dementieva holds the advantage in their head-to-head record, winning their only previous encounter in straight sets at the 2005 US Open.
