The Spaniard’s next opponent will be defending champion Philipp Kohlschreiber, the German fifth seed overcoming Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7/5).

Sweden’s Robin Soderling was another seed who struggled in his second-round contest before beating American qualifier Bobby Reynolds 6-3 4-6 6-2.

And fourth seed Nicolas Almagro needed three sets to get past Lu Yen-Shun of Chinese Taipei, 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 6-2.
