Del Potro finds his form

Masters Cup debutant and world number eight Del Potro recovered from his opening-day defeat by Novak Djokovic to remain in the hunt for a semi-final place from the gold group, while 23-year-old Tsonga suffered a second consecutive defeat at the eight-man tournament.

Both sets followed the same pattern as each player lost an early service game before Del Potro’s baseline style prevailed over Tsonga’s blazing serve, which saw the Frenchman hit 17 aces, but too many errors proved costly for the world number seven.

Del Potro earned his maiden appearance at the circuit finale after winning four straight titles, which propelled the 20-year-old into the world’s top 10 for the first time.

Next week he will look to help Argentina win a maiden Davis Cup title against a Spain side rocked by the withdrawal of world number one Rafael Nadal.
