Daniil Medvedev suffered quite possibly the worst loss of his career on Wednesday.
The Russian, seeded seventh at the Monte Carlo Masters, was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini.
Will Daniil Medvedev ever win another title on clay?
Daniil Medvedev lost 6-0, 6-0 for the very first time!
It was a shocking performance by Medvedev, who has previously expressed his distaste for the clay court surface.
Medvedev made only 36 per cent of his first serves throughout the match, winning just 42 per cent of those points.
By losing in such uncomfortable fashion, Medvedev also recorded an unfortunate career first.
Daniil Medvedev is double-bagelled for the first time in his career
Never before had Daniil Medvedev lost a match on the ATP Tour 6-0, 6-0.
That is until today, when the Russian struck 23 unforced errors during his Monte Carlo second-round match against Matteo Berrettini.
After squandering break-point opportunities on Berrettini’s serve during the opening game of the match, Medvedev’s grip on the contest quickly loosened.
The Russian’s frustrations boiled over midway through the second set when he smashed his racket seven times on the clay surface before putting the mangled piece in the courtside bin.

Despite the loss, Medvedev is set to maintain his position in the ATP top 10 after losing only 50 ranking points in Monte Carlo.
As for Berrettini, he has now won 17 consecutive games at the Monte Carlo Masters.
In his first-round match, Roberto Bautista Agut retired at 0-5 against the Italian due to an injury.
“Yeah I feel like yesterday, I started the match pretty well,” Berrettini said on-court after his stunning victory over Medvedev.
“The first game of the match I had to face two break points and after that I felt like my game was working pretty well.
“We all know Daniil doesn’t love clay as much as I do but he won Rome as well. That’s why I was focused.

“I didn’t want to lose my focus as I know tennis is a tricky sport and anything can happen during the game right?
“So I’m really happy with how I handled my nerve and really happy to be through to the third round.”
Matteo Berrettini makes history
Matteo Berrettini is the fourth player since the ATP Rankings were published in 1973 to defeat a top-10 opponent with a 6-0 6-0 scoreline.
The other players to do so were Ivan Lendl, Roger Federer and David Goffin.

OptaAce have also reported that Berrettini is only the second player since the format’s introduction in 1990 to reach the round of 16 in an ATP Masters 1000 event without having dropped a game.
The first player to do so was Lleyton Hewitt, who won 17 consecutive games to start the 2002 Cincinnati Open.
