When Alexander Zverev won Roland Garros, the reaction of the tennis world was interesting.

After all, there was a distinct lack of congratulations from some notable names, whilst many fans were quick to express their disappointment with this result too.

Alas, those who did not take to social media to herald the German have likely done so elsewhere, with Alexander Zverev revealing that he received private messages from stars like Rafael Nadal after claiming that elusive maiden major title.

Daniil Medvedev, speaking to Tennis TV as he wades into yet another grass-court season, has now offered his honest verdict on the latest Grand Slam winner.

Daniil Medvedev’s honest opinion on Alexander Zverev winning Roland Garros

Given the fact that the 30-year-old has had his longstanding frustrations with Zverev in the past, there could be scope for some potential frostiness when it comes to discussing such a triumph.

However, there was nothing of the sort when asked about this new Grand Slam champion, with Medvedev insisting he was ‘happy’ for Zverev.

How many more Grand Slams does Alexander Zverev win now?

What a final!

He claimed: “I think, first of all, it’s a great feeling, so I was really happy for Sascha, because he had some tough losses, in the semis, in the final, and the final was tough, five sets.

“So to see him succeed was actually a good feeling, and I’m pretty sure he feels good about this.

“I think the… how you say, the feeling, the after feeling for everyone is different. For me, for some time it was yeah, a bit like a bit euphoric and I managed to play so well, having this feeling and then step by step, you lose it a bit, and then you the new rhythm needs to come in so we have no idea how it’s going to work for him, but I think everyone is pretty happy for him.”

Zverev has already won his first grass-court match of the season, as he looks to translate his Roland Garros-winning form to this new surface.

When Alexander Zverev once called Daniil Medvedev ‘one of the most unfair players in the world’

As briefly touched upon, Zverev and Medvedev’s relationship has seldom been a positive one.

In fact, as recently as 2023, the latter insisted that the pair were not friends after yet another explosive feud broke out between them.

This came after Zverev had branded the Russian ‘one of the most unfair players in the world’ during their Monte Carlo Round of 16 match.

During that clash, at 5-4 down in the second set, Medvedev removed one of the net poles. Then, in the third set, Medvedev ran off the court at 4-3 to take a toilet break when both players were meant to only switch sides.

Zverev went on to lose that match, and afterwards stated: “I take fair play and sportsmanship very serious. He does not. He takes a toilet break when it’s not possible anymore.

Will Daniil Medvedev ever win another Grand Slam title?

“I’m extremely disappointed from him as an athlete.”

Medvedev responded in kind, claiming Zverev was ‘living in his own world’ and that he needs to look at himself ‘in the mirror’.
