Daniil Medvedev has rebuked a claim by Novak Djokovic that the courts are much faster at the Western and Southern Open this year.

This year’s event has moved to Flushing Meadows in New York due to the coronavirus pandemic, prompting Djokovic to make the observation on court speed after his first round match.

However, defending champion Daniil Medvedev, who beat Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-3 to move into the last eight on Tuesday, disagrees.

“I don’t feel the courts are extra fast this year,” Daniil Medvedev replied when asked about Djokovic’s comments.

“I returned much better than yesterday and was more solid.

“To win by this score and quite easily against Aljaz is a big challenge. I got used to the conditions better today.

“It wasn’t easy for him as it was already his sixth match and I just took my chances.”

Medvedev with face Roberto Bautista-Agut in the quarterfinals, and is likely to meet Djokovic in the semi-finals should he beat the Spaniard.
