Daniil Medvedev has enjoyed an excellent start to the 2026 ATP season.

The Russian, a former world number one, began the year by winning the Brisbane International title.

He added to this title a month later, winning the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Success in Indian Wells followed, as the Russian defeated world number one Carlos Alcaraz on his way to the final.

After losing to Francisco Cerundolo in Miami, the 30-year-old is now preparing for the clay-court season.

Medvedev has emerged as a Grand Slam contender once again; and he has a significant opportunity heading into the clay-court swing.

Daniil Medvedev could re-enter the ATP top five

Daniil Medvedev has only 410 ranking points to defend during the 2026 clay-court swing.

For comparison, world number one Carlos Alcaraz is defending 4,330 after winning the French Open and Italian Open; and reaching the final in Monte-Carlo.

Of the ATP top 10, only two players are defending fewer points over the same period: Taylor Fritz and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Carlos Alcaraz113,590
Jannik Sinner212,400
Alexander Zverev35,205
Novak Djokovic44,720
Lorenzo Musetti54,265
Alex de Minaur64,095
Felix Auger-Aliassime74,000
Taylor Fritz83,870
Ben Shelton93,860
Daniil Medvedev103,610
ATP top 10 as of April 2, 2026

Fritz may choose to skip the clay-court swing entirely as he continues to recover from a troubling knee injury, and Auger-Aliassime has struggled to capture his best form in recent months.

While Medvedev is not known for his clay-court ability, the Russian has enjoyed success on the surface in the past.

Medvedev reached the French Open quarter-finals in 2021 and won the Italian Open in 2023.

He has also made multiple Madrid Open quarter-final appearances, and reached the Monte Carlo semi-finals in 2019.

Will Daniil Medvedev ever win another Grand Slam title?

With only 615 ATP points separating Medvedev from Lorenzo Musetti in the world number five spot, the Russian has every opportunity to leapfrog the players in front of him and re-enter the ATP top five.

Musetti is defending 2,250 points across the swing: the second-most of any player in the top 10.

This factor should give Medvedev even more motivation to rise back up the rankings.

The last time Daniil Medvedev was in the ATP top five

Daniil Medvedev has not been in the ATP top five since the week of January 13, 2025.

The Russian’s woes throughout the 2025 season saw him drop significantly. On September 8, 2025, Medvedev fell to world number 18.

However, a strong start to the year has seen him rise back up to world number 10, and a robust clay-court swing will most likely see him rise further.

Medvedev will find out his potential first opponent of the clay-court swing when the Monte-Carlo draw is released on Friday.
