Daniil Medvedev advanced to the Almaty Open quarter-finals on Thursday after defeating Adam Walton in straight sets.

The former world number one was made to work hard by his Australian opponent, before closing out the contest 7-5, 7-6.

The Russian faces Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the next round, a player whom he beat at the 2024 US Open.

Medvedev has produced his best form of the season in Asia, reaching the semi-finals of both the China Open and Shanghai Masters.

And following his victory over Walton, Medvedev has set himself apart from the rest of the Tour.

Daniil Medvedev is the first player to reach nine hard-court ATP Tour quarter-finals in 2025

Medvedev was surprised about the pace of the courts in Almaty, and he may also be surprised to know of a positive statistic relating to his tournament appearances.

As reported by Mario Boccardi, Daniil Medvedev is the first player in 2025 to have reached nine hard-court quarter-finals at ATP Tour events.

His first appearance in a hard-court quarter-final came at the Open 13 tournament, where he reached the semi-finals.

In the same month [February], Medvedev also reached the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships. In March, he reached the semi-final of Indian Wells.

A fifth hard-court quarter-final came in June at the Washington Open, before reaching the same stage of the Hangzhou Open in September.

Three more quarter-finals have followed in quick succession: at the China Open, Shanghai Masters and Almaty Open.

How do the top 10 compare?

World number seven Alex de Minaur is the closest to matching Medvedev’s total among the ATP live top 10, having reached eight hard-court quarter-finals in 2025.

Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz both sit one behind de Minaur, on seven, while Ben Shelton is on six.

Holger Rune, who is projected to rise to world number 10 after Karen Khachanov’s loss at the Almaty Open, reached his fifth hard-court quarter-final of the year on Thursday following his victory at the Stockholm Open.

Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti have all made four.
