Dan Evans surely deserves a Wimbledon wildcard and the reason why is clear

Dan Evans has announced his intention to retire at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.

However, Evans’ Wimbledon status remains unclear as he is yet to receive a wildcard for the event.

Six of the eight wildcards were confirmed on Tuesday, including Stan Wawrinka, Grigor Dimitrov and Jacob Fearnley.

How do you feel about Dan Evans not being handed a wildcard for Queen’s? 🤔

Only two of Dan Evans, Gael Monfils, Matteo Berrettini and Nick Kyrgios can now be given a wildcard for the major event.

John Lloyd, the former British Davis Cup captain, has suggested that Evans does not deserve a Wimbledon wildcard for this year’s event.

However, is that really the case?

Dan Evans has been an excellent servant to British tennis

It would be absolutely ridiculous if Dan Evans is not granted the opportunity to play at Wimbledon this year.

Simply put, it would be cruel to deny Evans the chance to say goodbye to the Wimbledon crowd ahead of his retirement.

Evans has contested very few matches over the past eight months – last winning a contest at the 2025 Washington Open last July.

In truth, this factor is completely irrelevant when discussing the overarching matter at hand.

Evans is no Andy Murray. However, he is one of Britain’s most accomplished players of the last 20 years.

Evans is a former top-25 player, winner of two ATP titles [including the Washington Open], a two-time Masters 1000 semi-finalist, and a Davis Cup champion.

The Briton deserves his flowers; and a proper send-off at Wimbledon.

Dan Evans suffers Queen’s heartbreak

Dan Evans, to the surprise of some, was not afforded the opportunity to compete in one final main-draw match at the Queen’s Club.

Evans, who made his debut at the event in 2008, was not granted a wildcard for this year’s event.

The Briton later described the decision as lacking ‘class’; with many tennis fans on social media sharing the same sentiments.

Unfortunately for Evans, he was unable to advance through qualifying at Queen’s losing in the first round to Marcos Giron.

Evans played his last Queen’s main-draw contest at the 2025 event.

After upsetting seventh seed Frances Tiafoe in the first round, Evans was beaten by American Brandon Nakashima.
