The 18-year-old Frenchwoman dispatched China’s Jie Zheng, 6-3 6-2 to progress.

Cornet, the tournament’s number eight seed, broke Zheng three times in each set and saved seven break points on her own serve.

Up next for Cornet is a second-round meeting with either Russian Maria Kirilenko or a qualifier.

The top seed is Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic, who is fresh off a semi-final at Zurich last week – her first semi-final showing since winning the French Open in early June.

After a first-round bye, Ivanovic faces either Italy’s Francesca Schiavone or Austria’s Sybille Bammer.

All four of the top seeds, including Russia’s Vera Zvonereva, Poland’s Agnes Radwanska and Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder, received first-round byes.

In other first-round play, Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia had six aces while defeating Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 6-1 7-5, and Kaia Kanepi of Estonia captured all her seven break opportunities in beating Melanie Klaffner of Austria 6-4 6-0.

Kanepi will now take on Radwanska in the second round.
