Emma Raducanu failed to convert three match points against Jessica Pegula on Monday, before losing to the American in three sets at the China Open.

Raducanu looked set to book her place in the last 16, but could not convert any of her opportunities during the second set tiebreak.

Third seed Pegula eventually won the contest 3-6, 7-6, 6-0.

This was another disappointing loss for the British number one, who also spurned match points during her Korea Open loss to Barbora Krejcikova.

However, the Brit can take solace in her progress, according to former world number nine CoCo Vandeweghe.

Former US Open doubles champion CoCo Vandeweghe has weighed in on the progress of Jessica Pegula and Emma Raducanu following their match at the China Open.

Speaking on the Inside-In Tennis Podcast, Vandeweghe said: “I think it’s challenging to play in Asia with the conditions and we’re seeing some players relish those, one of them being Raducanu.

“But I think I’m more giving credit to Jess Pegula because after that tough defeat in the Billie Jean King Cup final, it’s not easy to pick yourself up and play again, and it’s one of the toughest losses you will ever have, losing in the final.

“It’s tough as players to come back, refocus, and get back into individual play and to kind of get things back going.”

Vandeweghe then turned her attention to Raducanu, highlighting the progress she has made under the tutelage of Francisco Roig.

She said: “I’m impressed with Emma Raducanu with the new team and the new coach she has with what she’s been able to do in terms of pushing top players more consistently and she’s actually playing more consistent tennis.

“So that’s going to be a good storyline in Australia, to see how she can perform when she’s worked with the new coach.

“With Jessica, it’s going to be a case of, ‘okay what level do we have coming into the year-end.’ So it’s different ideas for different players at this Asian swing.”

Emma Raducanu’s next tournament

After her disappointing defeat in Beijing, Emma Raducanu will hope to bounce back at the Wuhan Open.

The Wuhan Open offers Raducanu a big opportunity: to improve her ranking and secure a seeded spot for the 2026 Australian Open.

Moreover, Raducanu has no points to defend in Wuhan, as she did not play at the tournament in 2024.
