Coco Gauff might be a multi-time Grand Slam champion, but she is still a long way behind Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka in the WTA Tour rankings.
Gauff leads the American charge at the Australian Open, but she is currently 4567 ranking points away from Sabalenka in the top spot.
The American has failed to put together a consistent run of results during Sabalenka’s dominance, despite impressive victories last season at Roland Garros and the Wuhan Open.
Gauff has provided the explanation for why she is less consistent than the best two players on the WTA Tour.

Coco Gauff says her age is the reason for her inconsistency
Despite making her debut in 2018, Gauff is still only 21 years of age and she believes people forget that about her.
The American is three years younger than Swiatek and six years younger than Sabalenka, and she believes that gives them an edge in tennis.
Speaking about her form, she said: “It definitely is a goal to be more consistent. For me I look at it as life. They’re 25, 26. In most areas of life, a 25 year old or 26 year old is more consistent than a 21 year old.
How long will it take for Coco Gauff to complete the career Grand Slam?
“I kind of look at it like that. But also knowing that I do wanna be more consistent. I do wanna give it my all in each match.
“But I think more of that stemmed from my serve and having really good days and really bad days. I think the more that stroke becomes more consistent, the more my results will become more consistent.”
Gauff arrives at the Australian Open having never made the final of the Melbourne event. The American’s best effort was a semi-final appearance in 2024.
She lost to Sabalenka in straight sets in the final four and the current world number one went on to lift the trophy.
Coco Gauff’s head-to-head record against Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka
Despite Sabalenka’s dominance at the top of the WTA Tour rankings, Gauff does not have a negative head-to-head record against the star.
Gauff and Sabalenka have played out 12 matches, with both stars having won six. Gauff beat Sabalenka in the Roland Garros final, and also knocked her out of US Open in 2023.
Who are your favourites for the 2026 Australian Open title?
Swiatek has a far better record against Gauff, although it has been dwindling in recent years. The Pole has won 11 of their 16 matches on the WTA Tour.
However, Gauff has now won their last four meetings after dispatching the world number two in straight sets at the United Cup.
Swiatek hasn’t beaten Gauff since knocking her out of the Roland Garros semi-finals back in 2024.
