Clijsters cruises through

Clijsters, who came out of retirement last year to win the US Open, crushed Australian Molik – also on the comeback trail after taking a break from the game – 6-0 6-3 in an hour.

Seventh seed Melinda Czink is also through after beating Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-3 2-6 6-1, while American Vania King lost 4-6 6-2 6-1 to Andrea Petkovic.

In the men’s draw, James Blake beat fellow American and fifth seed Sam Querry 4-6 6-3 6-4 and sixth seed Jurgen Melzer also crashed out, losing 7-5 6-1 to qualifier Matthew Ebden.

Fourth seed Tomas Berdych avoided an upset with a 6-2 6-4 defeat of Nick Lindahl, while there were also wins for Carsten Ball, Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr and former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis.
