Croatian Cilic was a 6-0 6-4 victor over former champion Philipp Kohlschreiber, who won his first ATP Tour title on home soil in 2007.

The 20-year-old’s opponent in the last eight will be France’s Jeremy Chardy, who upset another German, sixth seed Kiefer, 6-4 7-6 (10/8).

Almagro continued his miserable run with a 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 defeat at the hands of Mikhail Youzhny – the runner-up to Kohlschreiber in 2007.

Spaniard Almagro reached the quarter-finals of the French Open last year but he has yet to find his form on the European clay this season.

A miserable day for Germany was complete when French seventh seed Paul-Henri Mathieu beat Denis Gremelmayr 6-1 6-4 to set up a quarter-final clash with Youzhny.
