The top seed from Croatia brushed aside Colombian qualifier Alejandro Falla 6-2 6-3 to set up a meeting with Daniel Brands of Germany.

Radek Stepanek also eased through, the Czech second seed overcoming Lukasz Kubot 6-4 6-1, while fourth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber beat German compatriot Dieter Kindlmann 6-1 6-3.

Feliciano Lopez, the 2004 champion in Vienna, ran out a 6-4 6-4 winner over Austrian wild card Andreas Haider-Maurer.

Jurgen Melzer found life a little more difficult against Marco Chiudinelli, the seventh seed eventually prevailing 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (12/10).

There were also wins for Philipp Petzschner and Jan Hajek in today’s first-round matches.
