The third seed dropped the first set but roared back to win the second, only for the Spaniard to dig deep to secure an impressive 7-6 (7/5) 1-6 7-5 triumph.

Polish qualifier Urszula Radwanska also caused an upset when she overcame sixth seed Aleksandra Wozniak in three tight sets.

Radwanska lost the first before recovering to win 3-6 7-6 (7/3) 7-5 in just over two hours.

Fifth seed Agnes Szavay also crashed out as Britain’s rapidly-improving Anne Keothavong clinched a 6-3 7-5 win.

Top seed Flavia Pennetta is through, though, after beating Israel’s Shahar Peer 6-2 7-6 (7/5), while fourth seed Zheng Jie edged out New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic 6-1 4-6 6-1.

Mara Santangelo defeated Nicole Vaidisova 6-1 6-1, while Virginie Razzano beat Maria Elena Camerin 6-1 6-2 and Gisela Dulko overcame Stefanie Voegele 6-2 6-3.
