In December, Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero parted ways.

Alcaraz and Ferrero had worked together since 2019, and under Ferrero’s tutelage, Alcaraz had become world number one and collected six Grand Slam singles titles.

Ferrero’s departure has left Samuel Lopez as Alcaraz’s sole coach for the time being.

Whether Alcaraz chooses to hire another coach remains to be seen. However, this has not prevented the wider tennis public from suggesting possible future coaching options for the Spaniard.

Brad Gilbert recently put forward Carlos Moya, and Alex Corretja also predicted that Alcaraz will hire a former player when the time comes.

Who would you like to see become Carlos Alcaraz’s new coach?

Mats Wilander, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, has also weighed in on the matter.

Former world number one Mats Wilander has stressed the importance of Carlos Alcaraz hiring a Grand Slam champion while speaking to Eurosport.

The Swedish tennis legend [pictured below, right] also emphasised that Alcaraz’s next coach should be someone who can challenge the Spaniard’s play style.

“I think it’s very important to have a Grand Slam winner in mind, he already had Juan Carlos Ferrero,” Wilander said, as reported by Punto de Break.

“And I think that if you are going to have another Grand Slam voice in your mind, that voice should come from a player with a different style.

“When you talk about Murray and Carlos Alcaraz, there is a similarity in their way of playing. But if you take John McEnroe and Carlos Alcaraz, you suddenly see a big change.

“Or if you take Stefan Edberg and Carlos Alcaraz, there is a big difference.

“Or let’s put Roger Federer, for example. Now, we’re talking about someone who could really help Carlos Alcaraz with the game he doesn’t feel so comfortable with.

Roger Federer is a 20-time Grand Slam singles champion; a player beloved by the majority of tennis fans across the globe.

If Alcaraz were to hire Federer, it would represent one of the most significant moments in Alcaraz’s career to date.

Federer has yet to delve into the world of coaching since retiring from his playing career in 2022. If he were to do so, tennis fans would most certainly welcome the Swiss legend back with open arms.

However, Alcaraz may simply decide to continue solely with Samuel Lopez. The Spanish coach, who Alcaraz hired in December 2024, has a stellar reputation on the Tour.

Lopez previously worked with Pablo Carreno Busta, guiding the Spaniard to the world number 10 position and seven ATP Tour singles titles.

The advice Roger Federer gave to Carlos Alcaraz

Ahead of the 2025 US Open final, Alcaraz revealed the pointers he had previously received from Roger Federer in an interview with Tennis.com.

Alcaraz said: “One person once told me that you don’t have to think about 35, 38 years old, still playing at that age,”

What would have happened if Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner played at the same time as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal?

“He told me, like, you have to be focused on the next five years, from here to when I am 27. And then, when I get 27, then think about five years more.

“So, it’s not about thinking in 15 or 20 years. It’s just about going year by year or just thinking about just five years maximum. We will see.

“We will see until what age I will try to take care about my body as good as I can. Now just to have a lot of years to come.

“I think that’s the best person that…could tell me that, and I will try to follow his words.”
