Carlos Alcaraz produced a scintillating display of tennis to comfortably defeat Arthur Fils in the Qatar Open final on Saturday.

Alcaraz took control of the match early, breaking the Frenchman’s serve five times on his way to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph in the Qatari capital.

The match was encapsulated on Alcaraz’s championship point, when he retrieved a powerful Fils forehand, whipping the ball cross-court past an astonished Fils.

While Fils was not playing at a level to sufficiently challenge Alcaraz on Saturday, the Spaniard did not make it easy for the Frenchman to play his game.

Speaking to reporters in Doha, Alcaraz said: “Yes, I played incredibly. Each match is different and has its style.

“I know Arthur is not far from his real level. He has shown it in this tournament and in battles we had previously, even though he made many errors today.

“I just tried to stay focused on myself. I played very aggressively, hardly made mistakes, served well, and returned well. It was a final where I had to give my 100%, so I’m happy to have done it. Very proud.

“I will rank this final, in terms of my performance, in the top 10 of my matches.”
