In what will be devastating news for tennis fans across the globe, Carlos Alcaraz will not be competing in the Davis Cup Finals this year.

The Spaniard, who recently lost the ATP Finals championship match to Jannik Sinner, will have been hoping to lead Spain to its first Davis Cup title since 2019.

However, Alcaraz confirmed this morning that he will not be participating in the event due to an edema in his right hamstring.

Spain, previously one of the favourites to win the title in Bologna, will now have to compete without their star man.

Alcaraz, understandably, is devastated by the news.

Carlos Alcaraz is ‘absolutely gutted’ after withdrawing from the Davis Cup Finals

On X [Twitter], Alcaraz said: “I’m absolutely gutted to announce that I’m not going to be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna…

“I have an edema in the hamstring of my right leg, and the medical recommendation is not to compete.

“I’ve always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is, and I was so excited to be able to help fight for the Salad Bowl. I’m heading home feeling heartbroken…”

Spanish captain David Ferrer will now hope Pablo Carreno Busta, Pedro Martinez, Marcel Granollers and Jaume Munar can produce exemplary performances against a strong Czech team in the Davis Cup quarter-finals.

The Czech team are certainly the favourites against Spain following Alcaraz’s withdrawal. After all, the Czech team boasts two top-20 singles players in the form of Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik.

Spain’s last Davis Cup title

In 2019, the Spanish Davis Cup team captured its sixth title of this century.

The squad, led by talisman Rafael Nadal, defeated Canada 2-0 in the final, winning the country’s first title since 2011.

Nadal, a winner of 22 Grand Slam tournaments, won the Most Valuable Player award after winning all eight of his Davis Cup matches that year.

The final match of the tournament was won by Nadal, who defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-6.

As per TNT Sports, Nadal said: “It was a perfect week. It was emotional, the crowd’s support was vital. There is not a better place to lift this trophy again. For me it was an honour to share this with everybody.”
