Carlos Alcaraz in the spotlight as 2022 ATP Awards nominees are announced

World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz and his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero have received a total of three nominations in the 2022 ATP Awards, after a brilliant year culminating in victory at the US Open.

Alcaraz and Ferrero picked up nominations in the most improved and coach categories, respectively, for a second straight year.

The 19-year-old is also nominated for the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award, alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime, five-time winner Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud and Frances Tiafoe.

The Spaniard will go up against two other young stars, Jack Draper and Holger Rune, and 25-year-old American Maxime Cressy for most improved player of the year. Draper and Rune are also among the five nominees for newcomer of the year, alongside Jiri Lehecka, Ben Shelton and Chun-Hsin Tseng, which includes players who broke into the top 100 for the first time in 2022.

Ferrero faces tough competition to receive coach of the year with Frederic Frontang (Felix Auger-Aliassime), Goran Ivanisevic (Novak Djokovic), Michael Russell (Taylor Fritz) and Christian Ruud (Casper Ruud) also nominated for the award.

There have been lots of high profile names making returns from major injuries this year and four of them have been nominated for the comeback player award. Grand Slam champion’s Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem make up two of the nominees, alongside Borna Coric, who won his first Masters 1000 title this year in Cincinatti, and Wu Yibing.

Comeback player of the year, most improved player of the year, newcomer of the year and the Stefan Edberg sportsmanship awards are all voted for by the players. Coach of the year is voted for by fellow coaches.

There is also the very popular fan voted award, for the fan favourite singles player and doubles pair. It will be the first time since 2002 that Roger Federer does not receive the singles fan favourite award, as he is not eligible due to inactivity on the tour.

The winners of all these awards will be revealed during awards week, which begins on the 12th December.
