Carlos Alcaraz dismisses ‘impossible’ Roger Federer comparisons after Laver Cup victory

Carlos Alcaraz has led Team Europe to a comeback victory at the Laver Cup, with the Spaniard being compared to Roger Federer by his fellow team members.Alcaraz played a major part in Team Europe’s fightback, after they trailed 8-4 heading into the final day. The four-time major winner was featured in a doubles match alongside Casper Ruud, as well as the decisive singles match against Team World’s No.1 Taylor Fritz, winning both to seal victory for Team Europe.
Alcaraz claimed a total of eight points on his debut at the Laver Cup, which is a record for the most points earned by a single player at one edition of the event. After his victory, Alcaraz appeared very pleased with how the whole weekend had gone down in Berlin, “It’s great obviously. We came here with a goal, all of us. It was to win the Laver Cup.” He continued, “I’m really happy, I think everybody for us is, we are really, really happy about reaching our goal, winning the Laver Cup. All of us did pretty good work over the days. “It’s been a really tough one. We almost lost but Sascha (Alexander Zverev) came up with really good tennis and gave me the chance to win the Laver Cup. I think we are really, really happy with, with with everything.”
Although Alcaraz did not want to talk about his own achievements too much, the World No.3’s efforts were certainly noticed by his teammates. The two-time Wimbledon champion was given the nickname ‘Fed 05’, drawing comparisons to
Roger Federer in 2005, when he only lost four matches in the whole year. However, Alcaraz claimed that it is ‘impossible’ to get to the same level of the former World No.1, who was in attendance last night in Berlin. “I’m too far from that level,” Alcaraz said with a smile on his face. “I’m too far. Hopefully one day, but I mean, it’s going to be impossible. So they have to change my name because ‘Fed 05’ is going to be forever him.”
Alcaraz does not have too long to celebrate his impressive performance at the Laver Cup, as he is set to play in the Beijing tournament that begins on Thursday.Inside the baseline…The Laver Cup receives a lot of critics, some rightly so, but day three of this year’s competition really showcased the best of the events fun and unique format. Carlos Alcaraz was unsurprisingly a huge part of that, and although it may be too early to draw Roger Federer comparisons, it seemed as though the Spaniard was definitely inspired with the former No.1 being in attendance.
