Carlos Alcaraz stunned the tennis world by withdrawing from the Italian Open and Roland Garros due to a wrist injury.

The Spaniard has won Roland Garros in back-to-back years, but he will not be able to perform the threepeat in Paris.

Alcaraz will now lose ground on Jannik Sinner as the Italian is now the overwhelming favourite to lift both tournaments.

There were reports that Alcaraz could return for the grass court season, but that has now been questioned.

Worrying return update on Carlos Alcaraz

Gazzetta have provided an update on Alcaraz following his withdrawal from the Italian Open and Roland Garros.

The Italian outlet believe reports that Alcaraz will return for Queen’s and Wimbledon are very far off the mark.

There is reportedly concern in Alcaraz’s camp that he could come back too soon and re-injure himself quickly.

Gazzetta believe Alcaraz could come back for the American hardcourt swing post-Wimbledon, specifically at the Cincinnati Open.

The Spaniard won the tournament last year so he could defend his title at the ATP 1000 event in the United States.

More cautiously, it has even been touted that Alcaraz could miss six months due to his wrist injury, which would essentially be the rest of the season.

Alcaraz has never been afraid to withdraw from an ATP 1000 event, but it’s been nearly two years since he missed two back-to-back.

Can anyone now stop Jannik Sinner from winning Roland Garros after Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal?

If yes, who?

The Spaniard has skipped the Madrid Open and the Italian Open consecutively this season, with potentially more to come.

In 2024, Alcaraz missed the Italian Open and the Canadian Open, although he did find time to play Roland Garros and Wimbledon in between.

Alcaraz withdrew from the Italian Open due to a right forearm injury and the Canadian Open due to fatigue.

Perhaps more telling, however, is that the Spaniard won both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in between, so it was perfect scheduling for Alcaraz.
