Baltacha was a comfortable winner against her Greek opponent Anna Gerasimou, triumphing 6-2 6-0 in the French capital.

O’Brien had a sterner test but eventually preveailed 6-1 6-7 (5/7) 6-2 against Karla Mraz of France. A third Briton, Georgie Stoop, did not fare so well, however. Croatia’s Petra Martic beat her 7-5 7-5.
