Baltacha defeated Latvian Anastasija Sevastova 6-3 6-4 to set up a second-round clash with American Carly Gullickson, who defeated Spaniard Estrella Cabeza Candela 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-2.

Stoop overcame Alexa Glatch 6-0 7-6 (7/5) and will next face Germany’s Kathrin Woerle, a 5-7 6-2 8-6 winner over Masa Zec Peskiric.

O’Brien rounded off a good day for the British players with a 7-5 6-3 win against Sandra Zahlavova of the Czech Republic to set up a meeting with Julie Ditty.
