Borna Coric celebrates winning Cincinnati Masters

Borna Coric wins Cincinnati – and completes remarkable haul of stats in doing do

Borna Coric recorded one of the most remarkable Masters wins of all time as he won Cincinnati, and the barely believable stats prove it.

The Croatian came into the tournament ranked 152 in the world and playing poorly after 13 months out with a shoulder injury.

However, he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6, 6-2 in the final to become the lowest ranked player to ever win an ATP Masters.

The remarkable statistics did not stop there, either. His run to the title was an impressive one to say the least.

R1 – #33, Lorenzo Musetti – 7-6, 6-3
R2 – #3 Rafael Nadal – 7-6, 4-6, 6-3
R3 – # 19 Roberto Bautista Agut – 6-2, 6-3
QF – #9 Felix Auger-Aliassime – 6-4, 6-4
SF – #11 Cameron Norrie – 6-3, 6-4
F – # 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas – 7-6, 6-2

That means every single player he beat in on his way to the Cincinnati Masters title has won at least one title on the ATP Tour this season.

Borna Coric has also become the first player this century to win an ATP Challenger Tour title and a Masters in the same season. The last player to achieve it was Mikael Pernfors in 1993, with Thomas Muster also doing it in 1992.

“I have no words, to be honest,” Coric said after the match. “It’s just unbelievable feeling.

“Like I said many times, I [am] just going to enjoy this. I thought I could play well. I was training hard, and I knew I could play good tennis, but that I could play this level tennis, I was just not aware. I’m just super happy.

“I believe always in myself. But again, [it was unlikely] to win the tournament when last week I was really playing poorly.

“I didn’t believe I’m going to win the tournament.”

As a result of winning Cincinnati, Coric has climbed an incredible 123 places in the world rankings and he will now be seeded at the US Open as a result.
