The showdown matches the teams’ top players and could decide the World Group relegation play-off tie, which is being staged on Wimbledon’s Court One.

Alex Bogdanovic launches Britain’s bid to avoid dropping into the Europe/Africa Zone next year when he opens the tie against Melzer on Friday.

Murray, the world number four, finishes Friday’s action with a clash against Alexander Peya before opening Sunday’s schedule against Melzer.

British number two Bogdanovic and Peya close the tie on Sunday afternoon.

Ross Hutchins has been chosen to partner Jamie Murray in Saturday’s doubles, with Julian Knowle and a busy Melzer selected by Austria.

Britain and Austria have met 10 times previously in the Davis Cup, with Britain leading the series 7-3.
