The Czech world number 28 was blitzed by home favourite Andreas Beck in the first set of their match on Centre Court before regathering to edge a two-and-a-half-hour epic.

Berdych’s 1-6 6-4 7-6 (7/4) victory set-up a last-eight clash with Australia’s former world number one Lleyton Hewitt – now a lowly 55th – who defeated Holland’s Thiemo de Bakker 6-3 6-4.

Shock of the day was secured by German youngster Daniel Brands, who overcame a rankings deficit of almost 100 places to vanquish France’s Julien Benneteau in three sets.

Both players won 97 points but it was the 21-year-old who went through to face Potito Starace with a 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8/6) win.

Starace won his all-Italian encounter with Simone Bolelli 6-4 7-6.
